April Pre-Passover News & Notes

Here's some of what's doing:

1. Matzah Making Factory - Confirming that there will be a matzah making demonstration this Sunday (4/9/06) at Lubavitch on the Palisades (11 Harold Place, Tenafly). Technically, the program is part of the Hebrew Schoolthere but the public is welcome. That is according to Rabbi Grossbaum of"Living Legacy" who is giving the program. He indicated that there aretwo sessions - tenatively 10:30 and 11:30. If you are interested inattending, you should let me know or contact either Rabbi Grossbaum at(201) 417-8121 or Friends of Lubavitch on the Palisades at (201)871-1152 . Space is limited and they would appreciate the "heads up".

2. Tuesday April 18 at the James McFaul Environmental Center in Wyckoff(during Passover Week Vacation) - Back in February during the Presidents' Week vacation, a few families gathered for a day at the McFaul Environemntal Center. Such a good time was had by all that another day out together is being planned. The organizer is Jacob Murad(thank you!) and the day is Tuesday April 18 in the morning . Jacob has reserved time for families, paying for 2 programs as follows:

*10:15 - 11:15 Busy Bees. Discover the world of honey bees and their kin, see the unique life inside the Environmental Center's observation beehive. This is an indoor program approximately 1 Hour.
*11:30 - 12:30 Ecology for all. What are the basic requirements of allliving things? Where does our food come from? Learn the important relationship between animals, plants and the environment. Program includes indoor and outdoor activities. Allow 1 hour.
Both of these programs are appropriate for mature kindergartners- 4th graders.

If you have expressed an interest to myself or Jacob in the past, please contact him to let him know how many of your kids will be able to join us so that he can let the naturalist know ahead of time for planning purposes. The center has easy walking trails and great exhibits thatthe younger set can enjoy as well.By the way, says Jacob, "please feel free to let others know about thistoo if you think they might be interested in joining us. The more the merrier".Jacob Murad's email: Tjkandjm@aol.com

3. Speaking of Passover, is there anything you do to make the Seder or the Holiday "Family Friendly" ? We would like to know and we are opening the subject up for discussion at our Parents' blog - "A Community of Parents". Do you tell stories, play games, serve special foods ? Are there any family traditions ? Is your seder a regular seder,"full length" or abridged version ? Does it work best for adults, kids, everyone or no one ? Share your thoughts and experiences at http://www.acommunityofparents.blogspot.com.

4. By the way, many "Community of Families" postings, calendar listingsetc. can be found at the blog for this group - http://www.acommunityofamilies.blogspot.com. What is the difference between the two sites ? The "Parents" group is a generic blog addressing issues of howbeing Jewish informs us in our role as parents in the 21st century. The"Families" blog relates to news and notes about this local group - our community of families. I hope you get the chance to check them bothout.

5. City Hike - For some time, we have been talking about the possibilityof doing a trip to the city for a walking tour, perhaps of the lowerEast Side, an ethnic neighborhood or The Jewish Museum combined withCentral Park. But more than one organizer in the city has suggested waiting until the kids were bigger (In our case until Simon (4) andHannah (2) were bigger). They say that there are many "family-friendly"events in the lower East Side & at the Jewish Museum but ages 8-9 & upare the best ages to start. So I'll revisit this with you next year(unless I see an event in the interim that is especially set up for younger ones)

6. Klezmer Concert - April 30 - The Hester Street Klezmer Troupe will beperforming in concert for a fundraiser for Recosntructionist Temple Beth Israel of Maywood and Temple Beth El of Hackensack. The concert isscheduled for Sunday, April 30 at 2 p.m. The good news is that kidsunder 5 go free (Tickets for those of us who are no longer under 5 yearsold - that's in physical years, not maturity level - cost $20 in advanceand $25 at the door). For information, contact: (201) 845-7550.(If you have any events to add, you can do so through an email to me orby a posting your event on the Community of Families blog-
http://www. acommunityofamilies.blogspot.com)

7. Darfur - As we gather at our seder table to recall being liberated from oppression may we all remain mindful and vigilant to do what we canabout the genocide in Darfur - especially we, a people who after WorldWar II vowed "Never Again".With this in mind we remind you about the Darfur Rally, Sunday, April30, 2-4 p.m on the mall in Washington, D.C. The Rally to Stop Genocidewill feature a broad spectrum of prominent political figures, faith leaders, human rights activists, entertainers, journalists and thousands of others who support a stronger multi-national force to protect the civilians of Darfur. Many local groups are making the trip to demonstrate with thousands of others in Washington. For more information, go to www.SaveDarfur.org/rally. For information about other ways to help go to: www.SaveDarfur.org.

8. Future Plans - Looking ahead, tell us what you like, what you don't like, what you want and what you don't want. We're thinking about what's ahead for our families and how this Community of Families can help. Howcan a Community of Families be useful to you and your family ? You can be part of our community of planners. Send along any ideas or comments as they might come to you. We hope we are always listening.

A Happy Passover to all.
